Alchemy has long denoted the transformation of something ordinary into something extraordinary. Alchemical processes of searching and striving for transformation, manipulation, and redetermination also play a large role in art, and it is exactly this approach that connects the work of Samuel Salcedo and Michelle Concepción. Salcedo, whose cast sculptures seek the essence of human heads and bodies, manipulates the casting process to shape its materiality and reveal traces of impermanence and manifest states of mind. Concepción builds up her auratic, sometimes large-format works like the individual stages of a scientific experiment. Using pigment and canvas, she attempts to reproduce natural processes and to integrate them into her paintings.
